Papaver somniferum (Bread seed poppy)
Missed the chance to autumn-sow your poppies from seed? These autumn-raised poppy plug plants give you all the advantages without the wait. Autumn-sown poppies develop stronger root systems, resulting in sturdier plants and earlier, more impressive flowering than spring-sown alternatives.
Papaver somniferum (Bread seed poppy)
A striking hardy annual with flowers in beautiful shades of pink through to deep purple. Bread seed poppies look particularly impressive when planted en masse or in swathes through the garden. Even after flowering, the large seed pods provide strong architectural interest and can be harvested for drying or used fresh in flower arrangements.
Plants typically reach a height of 60-90cm and flower from June to August. Papaver somnifereum is recommended by the RHS as an excellent nectar source, attracting bees and other beneficial insecs.
All of our plug plants are grown here in Cornwall using peat-free compost and sustainable practices, giving them the best start with strong, healthy roots. You’ll receive good-sized jumbo plugs that establish quickly and give you a real head start on the growing season.
Please note - Cultivation of Papaver somniferum is legal in the UK; however, harvesting or processing it for the production of drugs is illegal.
